Savoury crumble topping

Savoury crumble topping

Crumbles, like apple crumble, would have to be a New Zealand all time favourite - so why not make it savoury! There is hardly a quicker topping idea around and you can add your own variations with herbs and spices.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup flour
  • 125 grams buter
  • 1 cup grated cheddar cheese
  • 2 slices light wholemeal bread, trimmed of crusts
  • 1 pre made hot casserole

Method

  1. In a food processor fitted with the chopping blade, put the flour, butter and bread slices.
  2. Process until the mixture resembles crumbs. Pulse in the grated cheese. Season with a little salt and pepper if wished.
  3. Spoon over a hot casserole. Bake at 180ºC for about 20 minutes until the crumble topping is light and golden.
